sdi: Oil painting of the Heliconian Muse whispering inspiration to Hesiod. (Default)
From: [personal profile] sdi
None of these occurred to me, so thank you for proposing them!

I hope [1] isn't the case, since I would hope philosophers are better than taking jabs at their ideological enemies, but it wouldn't be the first time! Ironic, I suppose, that my own education was explicitly Christian, and I consider it to have been a very poor foundation for both my mundane and spiritual lives. I suppose some things never change!

[2] aligns with [personal profile] barefootwisdom's interpretation, above. Upon consideration, it strikes me as the most likely interpretation: you can't hope to set out on a journey if your house isn't in order first. (Bilbo Baggins notwithstanding.)

[3] implies that this sentence is merely an introduction to the rest of the work, and not, as I had understood it, as a "by the way, I'm covering material X, but I hope you all know that material Y is prerequisite, so I hope you studied it first."
