I think you're on to something particularly with Newton's quote—"If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants."—the X also refers to one's ambitions, goals, and future... it is, in a sense, where you're looking to, opposite the IV, which is where you've been (your "roots"), and one takes advantage of other's knowledge via communication (III).
