Saint Augustine of Hippo writes, in the Confessions, "What, then, is time? If no one asks me, I know; if I wish to explain it to one that asks, I know not."

Christopher Robin was asked, in Winnie-the-Pooh, "Don't you remember [the other stories]?" and he answered, "I do remember, and then when I try to remember, I forget."

So often I feel like I'm wandering aimlessly, and yet those aimless wanderings always seem to lead in the right direction. Thinking about this today, I was reminded of an old Zen poem (which I think belongs to Bukkoku Kokushi):

Although not consciously guarding
 the cornfield from invaders
The scarecrow is not
 standing there for no reason.
