I wonder if it works the other way? To the Neoplatonists, each level of reality is at once simpler and more potent than the ones below it... so maybe we don't understand because we're too loaded with politics and potato chips and work and bank accounts and clothes and email addresses and laptops and internets; if we only had love and nothing else, maybe it'd all make sense...
