My sense with the hymns is that they function as a useful image-based meditative system, not unlike the rosary or the St. Ignatius spiritual exercises in the Christian tradition.
Forgive me on this point, my friend, but, although I don't always agree with John Michael Greer, I think he is spot on when it comes to his contraindications of magic around children under 13. Although I'm out of the magic game at this point, even "natural magic," IMHO (contra Ficino), entails intermediary spirits, and has potential to go awry.
