Yeah! I have no idea what it meant to the Greeks, either; but for myself, I like to interpret it as the Greek numeral 5, since 5 is a circular number (that is, a number that, if you square it, ends in itself).

5×5=25
25×25=625
625×625=390625

(This process doesn't continue, but it does have the remarkable property that every time you do it, you add a digit at the end that will never change.)

To me, this symbolizes circular time, eternal recurrence, reincarnation, the way that bodies can be ever-changing while the soul remains constant, etc.
