There definitely seems to be a point in classical antiquity when the philosophers, perhaps the Platonists especially—of whatever flavor—find the more risque aspects of the myths a little embarassing.

Great connection, however, between the idea of mythological mysteries and the koan. I think you are on to something. A mystery that resolves is no mystery at all...
