Another potential way of looking at this is through the four stages of alchemy. The first stage is Nigredo. The second stage, the Albedo, is sometimes referred to as the Lunar Path (or Lunar Regimen). During this stage, you are working on the Astral Plane, which is usually your opposite gender body. For Herakles, I think this relates to the myths where he is a slave of Omphale (and dresses in her clothes and does 'women's work'). I've not studied Teiresias, so I'm not sure if this fits at all, but I figured I would share, just in case it helps in some way.
